Water-Ice-Storage - The Solar Heater

The sun sends us enough energy during the summer to be able to supply our heating requirements during winter as well. The only problem is storing the heat for about half a year. Conventional heaters using heat pumps access the heat stored in ground water, geothermal heat at about 1,5 m below ground level in the backyard or, using probes, at depths of around 100 m. The temperatures are raised from 8 to 10 °C to the heater's forerun temperature of 30 to 40 °C by the heat pump. This works according to the same principle as a fridge, where the pump extracts heat from the refrigerated interior and emits it through heating pipes into the kitchen. In the case of a radiator, heat is extracted from the environment and passed on to the living areas. Since exploiting the heat sources mentioned above is associated with various problems, we have developed an alternative method.

In a subterranean container, we utilise a cache of water for heat storage, including its latent heat which is set free during congelation. The heat of fusion in the water is equal to the energy needed to heat water from 0 °C to 80 °C. The major advantages are the low storage temperature (usually 0 °C), which for all practical purposes precludes heat loss, and small volume. Direct extraction of heat through the coolant also ensures high effectivity of the installation.

Solar collectors are part of the concept. These supply our heat during the summer and transitional periods and melt last winter's ice when it is not needed for refrigeration (that at this system is available quasi free of charge). Bigger, intermediate heat storage systems let the system run much more effectively than smaller storage units being used today.

Our new cache storage units are not pressurised: there is no pressure in the pipes until beyond the heat exchanger. This means that said storage units can be made from synthetic materials. The individual components are assembled in the house and can also be fitted later. A patented "Double Funnel" system ensures very good thermal layering of the water content, and funnel-shaped heat conductors make.
